INFO: How to connect to the fixedIP service

Applied to:

  • fixedIP service

Description:

The fixedIP service provides an unencrypted L2TP tunnel between your device and our endpoint to provide you with a static IPv4 address. This can be used in scenarios where your service provider places you behind Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT) or provides you with a public IP address that frequently changes. In principal the service can be used via any connection that permits UDP packets to port 1701 of our L2TP endpoint including mobile broadband and satellite based broadband.

To connect to the service your device must support L2TP (without IPSec encryption) and be configured to connect to the endpoint:

L2TP Endpoint fixedip.lns.hosting-platform.uk
Username <Provided via the Client Portal>
Password <Provided via the Client Portal>
Auth Type CHAP

Credentials can be retrieved via the 'Services' > 'fixedIP' > [service] > 'Service Details' section in the Client Portal.

Important:

  1. The fixedIP service only supports a single connection. If you attempt a second connection you will receive an invalid username/password response.
  2. Connect to the L2TP endpoint only via the hostname provided. Connecting using the IP address is not supported as it may change at any time.
  3. The device connecting will be Internet facing so you should ensure appropriate firewall rules are configured before using.
  4. SMTP access to/from TCP/25 is blocked as an antispam measure.
  5. Using the service will increase latency due to extra hops to and from our service.
